DAY 18 - I take “inspiration” from all over.....people, travel, art, exhibitions & the latest catwalk shows. I get so inspired (& stupidly giddy!) when ever I visit my leather suppliers & see beautiful new things to work with. This is the swatch card that I first saw that started ideas for the silver foil printed clutch I posted yesterday....seeing a tiny piece of leather & beginning to imagine what it can be turned into is part of the design process I love. The guys at JWood leather suppliers here in #yorkshire are the best...I spend hours in their warehouse debating on colours & ideas 😂😂

DAY 10 of #marchmeetthemaker is “branding”. As part of our branding we have been developing a debossed logo onto the leather so that it can be on the exterior of the totes and clutches. It’s still a work in progress, unfortunately the hand stamp seen doesn’t execute well enough - I work with leathers that are already dyed and printed & because of this I need a special machine that will apply heat - the exciting news is that we are soon investing in one of these amazing machines...which will allow the logo to be debossed to a very high standards AND it will also mean we can offer foil printed initials onto our products! It sometimes just takes time to get things right
Day 9 of #marchmeethemaker - “how it’s made” Each piece is made by hand - first comes the fun part - finding inspiration, picking a colour palette, souring the leather & trims & bringing it all together to create the design. From there each piece goes through many stages, read on if you’d like to learn more :
✂️ HAND CUTTING - each piece is hand cut .
🔥 BRANDING - using a special machine that applys a stamp/heat the logo is de-bossed into the leather (Coming soon to designs 😀) .
🔨 HAND STITCHING - holes are hammered & snaps are hand stitched .
🥌 HAND SANDING - light sanding is needed on some seams so the glue takes
➕ SEAMS GLUED & SEWN- seams are glued (to stop slippage) then sewn carefully on the machine
🖍 HAND-PAINTED - edges are hand painted using a special leather paint, 2-3 coats are applied and the final layer is a clear matt or gloss topcoat. .
💪🏻 HAND STITCHING - loose threads are finished by hand. Other little details such as the zip pull is also sewn on by hand. .
✨ CLEAN - the final product is cleaned and checked over .
👝PACKED - the final product is packed and 📦 SHIPPED!! #katieroestudio#meetthemaker
DAY 8 - “flatlay” Check out these trims 😍 - I only use quality metal trims on our products & here is a selection of what goes onto our clutches and bags. I love modern, clean shapes in shiny gold, silver & pewter and insist on using #YKK zips as they are a brand that you can rely - so you know the zips won’t break. I love the lobster clasp and chain that I picked up from @kleinslondon when I was last down in London....I’m bit of a #trim geek and could spend days looking for the perfect piece ....What’s your favorite trim of the bunch?! .

Day 6 of the @joannehawker joannehawker challenge is “workspace” - I work from a home studio & here is my desk & beast of a sewing machine (I use thick leathers and threads so this #industrial machine is key....the old machines are incredible and won’t let you down) I tend to work on the floor most of the time as I like to spread everything out and to be honest am a pretty messy worker! Don’t believe everything u see on #instagram 😜
Day 5 of #marchmeetthemaker - “photography” - not my strongest point...
.....my husband on the other hand is a photographer 🙌🏻. Recently he’s been so swamped in his own work and renovating our home that he has given me a few “lessons”....I’m slowly improving but feel like I’m #wingingit 😂 . His simple detail shots are always my fav - he captures the #neon hand painted edges perfectly in this shot....I love the special leather paints from Italian supplier @giardinigroup they have the best colours and the neons are 😍
Day 3 of #marchmeetthemaker “how you started”. In 2004 I packed my bags & portfolio & flew to NYC to find my dream job....I landed an amazing opportunity as an assistant designer for @abercrombie . I spent over 11 years as a womenswear designer, being taught & working along side incredible people at brands such as @jcrew and @gapinc . I fell in ❤️ working with #leather during my years at #gapinc - it was fun to design the leather jackets knowing they would be a part of someone’s wardrobe for years. I set up #katieroestudio when we returned home, I wanted to use my experience & passion to create a beautiful line of quality leather accessories. I also work as a freelance fashion designer, having a flexible work schedule has allowed me to spend a lot of time bringing up our boy and I’m very grateful for that.
Taking an hour out of my workday to #giveblood . Last week I read the inspiring and powerful letter written by the 27 year old Australian women who sadly passed away. As soon as I finished reading it I booked my appointment to give blood. It’s been 15 years since I have given blood - as a Brit living in America I was not allowed to give blood in the states. When I returned home I was pregnant and then breast feeding so finally I have be able to donate again. #thankful#❤️#givebloodnhs#nhs#leeds#blooddonation#noexcuse#katieroestudio#workday#workingmum
Just a little sneaky snap of the oversized tote I made for a friend last year. This one in black with grey edging. We worked together to make improvements on my initial prototypes. The perfect work bag - an interior zip pocket to keep a laptop safe, a small interior pocket for keys/phone, reinforced straps and base for heavy work folders and TONS of room for a gym kit, makeup bag, lunch - you name it!! My dear friend has been putting this bag through its paces so that I know it’s up to scratch! #comingsoon#perfecttotebag#development#perfectionist
Today was the last postage day for Xmas delivery. However local (and late!) shoppers - if anyone wants to place last minute orders or would like to see the collection in person I can happily drop by. #katieroestudio#leathergoods#lastminutegifts
