This legendary photograph taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt shows an American US Navy sailor passionately and joyfully kissing a nurse after the surrender of Japan was officially announced. Times Square, New York City, New York. August 14th 1945. As he was taking pictures of rapidly changing events during this single celebration, Eisenstaedt didn't have an opportunity to get the names or details of these two. The nurse was identified decades later as Greta Friedman, who claimed in 2005 that: "It wasn't my choice to be kissed. The guy just came over and grabbed! I wasn't kissing him, he was kissing me.", and this statement among others caused heated debates on the internet on if this was a sexual assault or not. The sailor is believed to be George Mendonsa, who was a seaman on leave from the ship USS The Sullivans and was watching a movie with his future wife Rita when someone ran in and exclaimed the war was over, causing everyone in the theater to run out to the streets in celebration with thousands of others. Rita is actually even believed to be in one of the photos and was witnessing Mendonsa kissing Friedman. George Mendonsa is still alive and occasionally gives an interview on the subject of the photo and the circumstances behind it, but sadly Greta Friedman passed away on September 8th 2016 due to health complications from old age. Alfred Eisenstaedt himself eventually passed away on August 23rd 1995, and he was even signing autographs of this photo just a few hours before his death.

Panzer V “Panther” tank after the Battle of Prokhorovka, July 1943. The Battle of Prokhorovka formed part of the Kursk offensive, and was fought on 12 July 1943 near Prokhorovka, a location really close to Kursk. The battle started when the 5th Guards Tank Army of the Soviet Red Army attacked the II SS-Panzer Corps of the German Wehrmacht in one of the largest tank battles in military history. The 5th Guards Tank Army suffered significant losses in the attack, but succeeded in preventing the Wehrmacht from capturing Prokhorovka and breaking through the third defensive belt. This made impulse the Germans to cancel Operation Citadel and began redeploying its forces to deal with new pressing developments elsewhere, wiith the Soviets regaining territory along a 2,000 km wide front after the battle. 300–400 tanks were lost by the Soviets, while only around 60 were lost by the Nazis. In the peak of the battle of Kursk, Soviet forces ascended to nearly two million and a half. Their numerical superiority, nevertheless, didn’t prevent them to lose three times more men than the German.
