Rabbit kittens touching noses – OK, so this is a pretty cutesy image and it might not be to everyone’s taste but when you’re pointing your lens at two rabbit babies and they suddenly do this then you’d be mad not to take the image. It was a wonderfully warm summers evening and I was lying in a quiet field somewhere in Norfolk. The rabbit warren was teeming with activity and I’d got myself into position a long time before the rabbit babies started to emerge. There was no need for a hide, no great amount of stalking and waiting for them to come out consisted of me lying in the sun for a few hours, intermittently dropping off to sleep only to be awoken by the sound of my own snoring! This was I must admit a gem of a site. When the first pair of ears did start to emerge I kept the camera on quiet mode and left it several minutes before I squeezed off the first shot. When the rabbit’s showed little interest I was then free to shoot on my normal setting of ‘Continuous High’ but I’ve never been a fan of the machine gun approach to taking images. I tend to fire little bursts of 2-3 shots before checking that my focussing is accurate and firing off a few more. When these two kittens came close to each other I was initially just pleased to be able to get both in the same frame, then I was further pleased when they both lined up on the exact same plane of focus and my evening of absurd luck was complete when they decided to do this. To be fair when this moment did occur I probably fired off more than 2-3 shots but it was irresistible and by this time the rabbits could not have been more ambivalent about the sound of my shutter. Commercially of course it is an extremely successful image but that is of little interest compared to the feeling of actually being able to witness this moment first hand. A red deer stag in a pine forest during a blizzard – This image represented some of the most challenging conditions that I’ve worked in as a photographer. Minutes earlier the scene was completely snow free but a brief highland storm blew through and within minutes the scene was transformed, carpeting everything including my camera and lens in wet snow. Under these circumstances checking exposures can be a challenge but with a dark subject against an all-white background a significant amount of over-exposure is usually required, sometimes up to +2EV. When I captured this image I wasn’t aware of the importance, or usefulness or checking my histogram to scrutinise the accuracy of my exposures and having given the back of screen only a cursory glance a number of these deer images ended up under-exposed, not significantly but irritatingly. Now however I know that having the pixels right up to, but not climbing the right hand side of the histogram will ensure that the snow is rendered as white, its traditional colour, and not the kind of murky grey that it becomes when an image is underexposed. Of course this will only be a guide and the final critical adjustments of 1/3 EV or -1/3EV either way will be left to the photographer as to how he/she wants the final image to look but as a rule when shooting under these circumstances I do like the snow to look quite bright and white and so I do shoot with the pixels right up to the right hand side. This is how the histogram is with this image and so this can be used as a guide. Of course, if our dim-witted tabloid media are to be believed then the UK is in for the mother of all winters, though I’ll believe it when I see it, and so hopefully you’ll all get plenty of practice shooting in these kind of marginal, but transformative conditions.
