In 1983, at the height of the Catholic Church’s power, Ireland passed some of the most restrictive abortion laws.
A LOT has changed in Ireland in 34 years.
The 90’s and 2000’s unearthed scandal after scandal within the Catholic Church with cover-ups extending all the way up to the Vatican.
Cases of women dying in pregnancy because they were refused a life-saving abortion.
The people of Ireland today are some of the world’s most highly educated, highly travelled people and have been breaking barriers all over the place :
2 Female Presidents
The first openly gay AND son of an immigrant Taoiseach (Prime Minister)
The First Nation in the world to vote Yes to Marriage Equality.
It was only a matter of time before they came for the 8th Amendment and said “Enough Is Enough”
Unfortunately, in America, things seem to be going backwards instead of forwards with our president suggesting “some kind of punishment” for women who have a pregnancy termination- even if that pregnancy is a threat to the mother’s life.
Let’s keep going forwards.
Well done Ireland 👏
