Pipeline bringing water from the mountains to the villages of Phyang, Ladakh. Because glaciers are shrinking as an effect of global warming, there is a serious water shortage. Sonam Wangchuk, a famous engineer and founder of the ecovillage/ school SECMOL invented the Ice Stupa. This in collaboration with the students of SECMOL. In 2016, Wangchuk was awarded a Rolex innovation grant, money he will use to create the next generation of ice towers. Making these artificial glaciers at lower altitudes using pipes, gravity and night temperatures not only helped agriculture but they’re also able to transform the arid landscape we normally find here into an oasis.
