Zahra leads a group of her peers twice a week in sessions that include lessons in life skills and sports activities.
In order to encourage young Iraqis to get down to the serious business of creating a better future, we adopted a novel approach: help them play.
The program at Zahra's school pairs life skills with movement and sports and is now in 30 Baghdad schools, 15 for boys and 15 for girls.
Mercy Corps trains young Iraqis to mentor groups of their peers. For most of the girls in Zahra's group, exercise has never been encouraged, and she hopes the joy of play will reinforce the larger lessons she shares with them.

This week we received a message from our local partner in Damascus, Syria, reporting: “Bombs are falling like rain!” Violence and bombings between various warring factions in #Syria have been increasing. As the conflict continues, the country has seen a string of dangerous and worrying escalations. On January 22, there was severe bombing in the Christian area of #Damascus and there were 9 casualties and 21 injured -- mostly children.
We are working with our local partner in Syria to bring aid to the displaced through daily necessities like food, as well as emotional and spiritual care.
Will you partner with us? For more info... Click the link in the bio #refugeerelief#syriarelief#humanitarianaid

Despite all the negativity and ugliness that has been in the news recently with regard to bad behaviour of SOME humanitarian workers, I know that there are tens of thousands of others, myself included, who truly care about the people we work on behalf of. I’m proud to be a part of a team that cares. To all the wonderful men and women from near and far who sacrifice their time, energy and sometimes their lives, to save and improve the lives of vulnerable people in crisis worldwide... I thank you.
