Creating a solid/ Jet black finish on Sapele (Janka hardness scale reported of 1,410 lbf/6,280 N)
Exotics and other timbers can be particularly difficult, especially if you are limited to Diacetone Alcohol stains and certain Naptha and other petroleum based solvent stains which often give you a bluish black result.
In the Carbon Black industry blacks are visually characterised as having a blue or brown undertone or some gradation in between when dispersed in a coating system.
The phenomenon of undertone results from the fact that both scattering and absorption effciencies of carbon black vary with wavelength.
The first step to the result above is to pre-pop this hard Sapele (120 grit) with water, allow to dry and then stain the Sapele with our Precolour Easy Intense black water based stain which is formulated with a preferential absorption of blue light by decreasing pigment aggregate size thus creating a Jet black stain.
Finally this was finished off with one coat of our high pigment/hiding Charcoal oil.
On a technical level this is how we have created a Jet black finish .

The 18 foot conference table is DONE! Built from solid Ash and Steel, with a Walnut & Bloodwood Inlay.
I designed and built the whole thing from scratch. Probably close to 1000lbs in total..
Lots of bumps and bruises from this job, but I didn’t quit.. Hard work cures all. A few months back I taught myself how to TIG Weld off of @youtube, and a few years ago I thought myself how to glue a table top together.. You can do anything you put your mind to, all it takes is hard work💪💪

This build just makes me happy. I can’t wait to throw out the rest of the plastic junk in the playroom and replace it with more cool pieces like this! I finished this table with @rubiomonocoatusa which makes me happy knowing it’s a safe finish for my kids to play on. Thanks Rubio!
You're welcome @3x3custom!

A few TIPS on using @rubiomonocoatusa:
1) sand up to 150 or 180 depending on the application. We sand to 150 for high traffic pieces since oil penetrates and protects better with the lower grit.
2) use a kitchen scale to accurately measure out the 3:1 mix.
3)use a squeegee to spread the oil on your work piece.
4) use blue shop towels to wipe in/off the excess oil.
5) we will sand at 220 grit and apply another coat 24 hours after the first coat if we want a little more sheen and a smoother finish.
