I hope you don’t mind me posting a few more pictures of the oribe kiln pack—I have so many images I’ve wanted to upload here but I’ve tried to keep my Japan posts as current as possible for the most part.
This collection of photographs shows the stack of pots and shelves wheeled into the kiln with one of eight burners showing just before the door is closed and let slowly preheat overnight. Anyone whose fired a trolley kiln will know how nerve-racking wheeling the work in and out is, especially with all my narrow cylindrical vases I even glued them down so they wouldn’t rattle around going in. It wouldn’t stop an earthquake from knocking them over though and there was one during the firing, albeit only small, thankfully no damage came of it. Ken Matzusaki was telling me it’s a fairly common problem, pots slipping off their wadding setters due to a sudden tremor.
The second photograph shows the single cone used to fire the kiln and a handful of little tiles, placed carefully in tiny handled trays made of wadding. Every few hours, as the firing nears the end they’re drawn out with a metal rod, shown in the next picture, and dunked in cold water. The temporary tray is cracked off and the tile is immediately cool enough to handle.nYou look for how transparent the glaze is on them as well as if any remnants of red remain, which should all have ideally disappeared by the end.
The final picture shows the kiln stacks half way up with the absurd amount of bricks below, which are all part of the trolley and add to it’s massive weight, especially when fully packed. Packing kilns when you’ve got access to every side is glorious, after years of packing top loaders and front loaders this makes for such a relaxed change, no having to awkwardly lift heavy kiln shelves through tight doors, I’d love to own one in the future.
Being a southern kid, I’d always dreamed about visiting Northern Iran. And when I finally did, it was just as I imagined—epic. Usually, I’m not one for nature but damn, the beauty of Masouleh was overwhelming.
