#SpringGo finished! The boys and I tackled our last few blocks of River Forest this afternoon to complete our map. I loved incorporating them into this challenge put on by @livelyathletics. You can see on our map that some areas are green and others are yellow. The green streets are the ones we did together and the yellow I did by myself or with my husband (the black scribbling was my 3-year-old with a pen). Some big takeaways:
You can get kids to walk pretty far if there is a park on the route.
There are at least four ways to get to the same park.
Snacks are great motivation, but even better is letting them pick out a snack at a store (that they have to walk to, of course).
It’s not always the big things that interest them— in fact, whatever is on the ground is usually more likely to capture their interest than architecture. Sticks, pinecones, rocks, pods, and leaves are all cool.
Walking around your neighborhood can be a great way for kids to train for hiking in the mountains, even if you don’t have a single hill.
And finally, River Forest is a beautiful town. We are so proud to call it home! #walking#walkability#boymom#hikingwithkids#riverforest#walkingchallenge#runningchallenge
You know that feeling when you come back from vacation and reality sets in and you’re reminded that your life isn’t that cool and your scenery isn’t that great and you have responsibilities and stuff? Yeah.
That’s how I was feeling today when my husband and I set out on a walk in a part of our town that I’m not too familiar with. I’ve been working on a challenge called #SpringGo (put on by a local running store) to run or walk every street in the village of River Forest before the end of March. To be honest, I wasn’t feeling enthusiastic about walking on boring, flat sidewalks today (after three days of hiking on gorgeous mountain trails), but I want to finish this challenge so begrudgingly I headed out with a highlighter and the map. I really wasn’t expecting to enjoy myself, but as we came across some old, unused railroad tracks, I found myself excited to turn them into a balance beam. Soon after, we walked alongside Thatcher Woods, our “boring” forest preserve, and I realized how happy it makes me just to see the forest. As we turned back toward the neighborhood, we stumbled upon a sun dial and a cute little patch of grass with a bench. We saw people walking their dogs, kids playing outside, fancy homes we couldn’t even dream of owning, and modest ones that made up for their size with character. By the time we were done walking, I was done mourning the end of our vacation. It sounds so cliche, but happiness really is about making the most of what you have and finding joy in the small stuff. And also, when you’re feeling stuck, take a walk— no matter where you are. #takeawalk#takeahike#walking#justwalk#riverforest#springbreak
Strolling through the neighborhood and making memories. Today was absolutely gorgeous and we took advantage to work on our #SpringGo map. We’ve been tackling different sections of River Forest (the green part was today), each time including a destination for play (such as a park or open field) and a place we can stop for a snack. I’ve learned over the years that with kids, this is pretty much all you need to gain compliance— feed them and let them play!
I’m loving this challenge because it’s gotten us out of our usual neck of the woods, but taught me that you don’t have to travel far to have an adventure. My kids think it is the coolest thing ever to walk to a different grocery store and to “discover” new parks and landmarks. The best part is, everyone’s getting along and we’re doing something that’s good for our bodies. Disclaimer: I did let the little guy ride in the stroller today, for the first time since the challenge started. But otherwise, he’s been a trooper!
