70 years ago today, the ship MV Empire #Windrush arrived in London carrying approximately 500 passengers from Caribbean countries. Today we commemorate the ship’s arrival and celebrate the contribution of the Windrush generation, many of whom travelled to Britain as a response to post-war labour shortages in the UK.
‘Without warning, the water swept his soul from the deck.
Zachariah looked at the water and felt the song swell inside him.
It was said each person recognised their fate in the song,
and as he stood there, the Caribbean sank into the water.
The land was there, but he will not go to it anymore.’

Was invited by Arthur Torrington of Windrush Foundation to a tribute event for Sam King yesterday. Was held at St Margaret's church Westminster Abbey. Hosted by Baronness Floella Benjamin; with tributes from Dione Mcdonald (with me in selfie), Lord Herman Ouseley of Peckham; calypsonian Alexander D Great (composed a song about Sam) and myself (reading a poem dedicated to the 'windrush experience ' esp against the recent scandal... called 'strange familiars'... will post to blog later), and Arthur Torrington giving an extended tribute to Sam King. Was an honour to be invited and participate. I never knew him but respect his journey and the contributions he and others made many years before my generation came to the UK. My gye nyame head wrap came in well for the occasion for loadsa reasons. #windrush#windrush70#reMEMBER#strangefamiliars#waywivewordz#poetry
The #Windrush scandal has seen outrageous deportations and revealed the racism at the heart of immigration controls. #TheresaMay, the architect of the #hostileenvironment said 'deport first, ask later'.
Join this meeting tonight at 7 in Brixton to debate whether a world without borders is possible.
And don't miss the panel on 'After Windrush: what does it mean to be British?' at #Marxism2018 on Sunday 8th.

Just dropped the 360 off at it’s new home away from home; @carstorage. I’m struggling to find time to properly get out and drive the car at the moment so it’s great to know it’s in good hands whilst I’m away ... also good to know it has a friend to hang out with 🌚🚗🚗 #SeenThroughGlass#Ferrari#360Modena#360ChallengeStradale#Windrush

The Windrush justice fund ! There’s amazing work being done and we wanted to stand alongside them, and help in whichever way we could. The first £15,000 raised will fund legal assistance, including a helpline by the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants for those affected by these rules.
Since the Government removed legal aid from most immigration cases, donations are needed.
Education is key to understanding and I for one don't remember learning about #Windrush in school! Happily it's now easy to fill in the gaps and whether you're pink or blue, dark or pale, give @recognizeblackheritage based in #Birmingham a follow @ichoosebirmingham @birmingham_caribbean_festival @thecleankilo @birmcons @birmingham.life
